The Sea of Galilee, also known as Lake Kinneret, is one of the most famous bodies of water in the world. Jesus is said to have delivered sermons here, and the lake is also surrounded by a host of notable sites including Capernaum, where he is said to have performed the miracle of the loaves and the fishes. Notable historical sites include Migdal, Tel Hadar and the city of Tiberias. Tiberias is the largest city in the region and popular not only for its ancient archeology, but because of its Hot Springs, where visitors can indulge in a range of pampering treatments.
A Region of Diverse Landscapes
The Galilee Mountains rise above the lake to the east and west, with the foothills of the Golan beneath, while to the north is the Beit Tsida Valley, and to the south the Jordan estuary which flows towards the desert. This makes the Sea of Galilee the perfect base from which to enjoy nature at its best, with Beit Tsida Nature Reserve, Hamat Gader, and the lower Golan Heights region easily accessible – an area which is packed with spectacular scenery and wildlife.
The Sea of Galilee beaches offer a range of activities, with opportunities for boating and water sports, and there are plenty of places which hire out canoes and other equipment. Families can also take advantage of the water-based fun on offer at the resident water parks.
Where to Stay
Many of the beaches feature camping areas, while visitors who prefer a little more luxury have a wealth of accommodation to choose from with the region home to hostels, beachfront hotels and guest houses.
